How to be clean for life

Hey,

How you doing today? Hope all is well in your part of the world.

What I'm about to share with you is an area of health and fitness that you may have overlooked before and may not have paid huge amount of attention to. It's an area that we spend allot of time doing externally but not as much as we should internally.

What am I talking about? I'm talking about cleansing and detoxing.

The term 'Detox' is is an abbreviation of the term 'Detoxification' which can be simply interpreted as a process that means 'Alternative medicine'. To Detox means to rid/clear your body of toxins that have built up and may cause harm or compromise the health of your body. 'Cleansing' is another word used in the same context as Detox.

So why is Detoxification important?
It is very important because you want to be as 'healthy' as possible and without cleansing or detoxifying you can't be.

"Good clean fun" -The local cleaning service
Some of you may know that I'm currently trying to rent my home at the moment (If you know of anyone who wants to rent a 2 bed home in north Leeds, give me a shout). After the last tenant left, I thought to myself if I want to let the house quickly and easily, I should give the place a good clean and tidy up! I wanted to hire the local cleaning service, but something told me my girlfriend would not be too pleased if I did!

So I went about cleaning it myself. I'm thinking "if I can clean this place as best as possible, then no germs or dirt can live here and it would be more appealing to a nice tenant to live in". This is just a simple illustration of how we 'think' when it comes to externally cleaning. We do it all the time. We shower, bathe, wash our clothes and our cars, we do it all the time. It's also very important to remember to clean internally as well.

Every day you are exposed to toxins and bacteria that your body is constantly battling against. These come in many different forms. You may have picked up a copy of our new Optimum Healthy recipe. If not, you can pick up copy here. As well as giving you some great healthy food options, it touches on the importance of cleansing and the different forms of toxins that your body has to deal with. These include, additives in food, pesticide and preservatives in food, prescribes drugs, chemicals in animals and air pollution. And if you like a drink every now and again, you may be disappointed to hear that Alcohol can build up toxins in the body too!

A Detox helps get things working back the way they should. Over a period of time as you're continually exposed to these toxins, they can build up in the body and compromise the bodies ability to function correctly and even in some cases cause disease. These may be minor issues such as candida or fungal infections or major conditions such as forms of cancer, but regardless of the form, you need to reduce your risk of ANY type of condition by performing a detox.

There are different reports out there that say how often you should cleanse, some suggest 3 times a year while others say it should be done as often as possible, every month.
My personal stance is that you should perform it at least 6 times a year. (every other month). There are products that help you do that, some great ones, some not so great. I'm currently testing one now to see the effects before I recommend it to my clients. It's in the form of drops and it's mixed with pure water. I need to be 100% sure that before I recommend a product to my clients, its' sound and worth the money. I'll let you know my final thoughts on it.

Another reason why you need to perform detox is to help your body function at it's optimum best. Think of your body as a factory of trillions of tiny cells that all perform a function as they grow and eventually die. Each of those trillions of cells want to work their best for you before their time comes to an end. Whether that be to help grow your hair and nails or help your skin look young and healthy; each of those cells need to be in the best environment in-order to do that. If you levels of toxins in the body are high then they can't function at their best.

Detoxifying your body will also help your liver function more effectively. This is very important if you have any weight/fat loss related goals. Your liver plays a crucial role in your bodily functions especially when it comes to "fat metabolism". I'm not going to go into huge detail in this post but just remember if you goal is to look great and get back into those clothes you've been hiding, or if you simply want to look amazing on your beach holiday, then you need to look after your liver as best you can and by performing a detox, this will significantly help.

I've listed 5 points you need to remember when performing your detox.

1. Consult your GP.
Most, if not all detox and cleanse programs/process involve eliminating or significantly reducing certain foods. It's always wise to speak with your GP or a Health & fitness professional  if you have any concerns of the effects of performing a detox. The majority of people will see huge benefit. But if in doubt consult first.

2. Don't go crazy
A Detox or a full cleanse program will only last for a set period- 7,10 or 14 days. Try to remember that it's not forever. You can ease into the Detox program/process by slowly 'reducing' foods and at the back end of the process slowly 're-introduce' those food if you wish to. For example, if you drink 5 cups of tea/coffee every day reduce it down to 2.

3. Get Prepared
To make the process as easy and simple as possible, you'll need to prepare as best as possible. Look at the details of the detox, see how long it lasts, what are the main benefits, what foods are required and see if it works for you. Shopping for the foods you'll need 'before' is always a good step. Following a Detox requires a good level of discipline, so you need to ensure your mentally prepared too. There are hundred's of different types of detox diets out there all offering certain benefits. Don't follow a  Detox plan that you don't feel works for you.

4. Exercise
You don't need me to say more than that, but you need to be physically active for the any detox process to have maximum benefit, so make sure you do some form of exercise. This should be a habit for life not just whilst performing a detox.

5. Get some R&R
When you do any detox or cleanse process, do not get stressed or worked up about it. You may want to do your detox with a friend so you can give each other support. Do what you can and make sure you get plenty of 'rest & relaxation' too. Reducing your levels of stress by getting plenty of rest will maximise the benefits of the detox process and leave you feeling absolutely amazing!
